What I Wore: tip to toe (To the White House)

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM OUR NATION'S CAPITAL!
I cannot express how much it meant to me to go on the White House Holiday Tour. I am a fourth generation native Washingtonian and I've lived in Washington DC for almost three decades (the last decade spent mostly in California, but I'm home now) and in the past I've considered the White House just another government building downtown, but a few years ago I wanted to take an out-of-town guest to visit the President's home and realized visiting the White House is no small feat...even for a local!
I have been "on the list" for at least 3 White House Tours that were cancelled for various reasons, but yesterday evening I had the pleasure of FINALLY going inside the White House and my visit was certainly worth the wait.

I STOOD IN THE DRIVEWAY OF THE PRESIDENT'S HOME AND WATCHED HIM TAKE OFF IN  MARINE ONE (Presidential Helicopter) FOR A HAWAIIAN HOLIDAY WITH HIS FAMILY.

I SPOKE WITH THE NEW MAYOR OF DC, VINCENT GRAY WHO WAS ALSO TAKING THE TOUR AND MARVELLED AT THE STATE DINING ROOM (i took a picture with him, but it didn't come out...maybe I'll see him again in Target like I do the Former Mayor Marion Barry).

I HAD HOPED MICHELLE OBAMA (or Bo-bama the dog) WOULD BE AROUND TO SAY HELLO, BUT OVERALL I COULDN'T HAVE BEEN HAPPIER TO FINALLY VISIT THE WHITE HOUSE.

Shop-Til-You-Drop: SHOP YOUR CLOSET

After dropping $350 on shoes (in my defense I purchased close to 10 pairs for that price)...and another $150 on clothes (J.Crew your 20% off final sale items sucked me in)...I've decided to go on a shopping ban!
{photos from my actual closet}

For the months of OCTOBER and NOVEMBER I'll be...
CLOSET SHOPPING:

  • create fresh new outfits based on what you already own
  •  take pictures so you can remember what to wear, when.
  • find a great tailor to help you mend or rethink the garments you already own
  • create a shopping list to turn your "orphan" garments into outfits
It helps that I won (and just received from the lovely Janice at THE CAPITOL FASHIONISTA) a $200 gift certificate from Style for Hire, a personal shopping company launched in DC by Stacy London of What Not To Wear. The part of the program I'm looking forward to the most is the Closet Shopping where the stylist will spend around 2 hours going through up to 40 items in my closet.

My horoscope seems to agree that I need to cut back on my Retail Therapy...

How Was Your Day

My original blog, howwasyourday.tumblr.com, was started when I was living in San Francisco; I had recently ended a position in Marketing and was consulting at Monster.com.

While chatting with my mom over the phone she asked me what I'd worn to work.

I tried to describe my outfit, but she said "just email me a picture" I did her one better and posted the photo online in my very first Tip-to-toe blog post.

Every evening since I was a child, my mom would ask us "How Was Your Day?" and I'd like to share that with you.

As often as I can I'll post my top five moments of the day or week in a How Was Your Day post; and I want to hear from you so I hope you will leave comments and let me know...How Was Your Day?

How Was Your Day?

1. Got an unexpected reimbursement check...Yay!

2. Took the check to the bank and decided to grab food...got rammed by a car in the parking lot...Boo!

3. Survived with only minor injuries to myself and my car...Yay-dot-com (and thanks Honda Civic)

4. Ended up with a wicked headache and a trip to the ER...Boo!

5. While waiting in a hospital gown that was NOT designed by Diane von Furstenburg checked Twitter and saw that I won a $200 gift certificate to Style for Hire, the new personal shopping company founded by Stacy London of What Not to Wear...Yay!

Alls well that ends well!

Doggie Dish: Doggie Swim Day

The Washington, DC Department of Parks and Recreation held it's 2nd annual Doggie Swim Day at two pools in NW this past Saturday.

Check out my westie Bradley enjoying the neighborhood fun at Upshur Pool in Petworth.

Also happening in Petworth is the construction of the first dog park in Ward 4 right next door to the Upshur pool; the dog park is set to open October 2010.

Becoming a Social Media Rockstar

Top Fives Tips

1. DO ONE THING AND DO IT WELL!

Define your style, whether you're the queen of the pencil skirt or have a wardrobe entirely from Forever21...OWN IT!

2. LET THE FUR FLY!

Grab a pooch- they don't take direction well, but they look adorable in the background of your photos; popular bloggers with doggies include Julia Allison who owns a Shih Tzu and the glamourai who owns a Papillon.

3. USE YOUR LBD AND YOUR LBB

Throw on that little black dress and flip through your little black book because I want you to date (or at least wake up next to) a photographer- you need someone to take your picture every morning ; )

4. GET GEEKY!

Get a digital camera (you may need a FlipCam or other recording device later), buy a smartphone (you don't have to break the bank I have a Samsung Finesse by MetroPCS and my bill is a flat $55/mo.); create pages on  Twitter and Facebook for your blog and restrict posts to topics related to your blog.

5. MAKE A PASTIME A FULL-TIME

Like most bloggers I work on my blog in my spare time, but recently I've been offered the opportunity to consult Social Media campaigns of other bloggers and start-up businesses and have decided to pursue a career in the industry.
