Warby Parker Class Trip (DC)

Hop on board the bus and join the Warby Parker Class Trip. I joined them on their first stop in Washington, DC at Union Station. This weekend you can find them in Georgetown on M Street (between Wisconsin Ave and 31st St) from 11am to 7pm.

You can try on all of the available style including the new Holiday Collection, which had just launched when I visited. I brought my prescription with me so I was able to order a pair of  "Crane" frames in Mallard Green. For just $95 I will recieve a pair of stylish Warby Parker glasses complete with my prescription and a pair of frames will be donated to a person in need

I'm wearing my old Warby Parker frames in the photos above, scroll all the way down to see my new ones! I want to see you in your Warby Parker frames if you visit the Warby Parker Class Trip bus Tweet me a photo (@breaellis).

DC after Dark

I recently had an out of town guest visiting DC for a few days and I took the opportunity to play tourist in my own city. We went on a "DC after Dark" tour of the memorials by moonlight. It all started off nicely enough...and then it rained. Not just a sprinkle...the sky opened up and poured on the top level of the open top double decker bus and drenched us! Luckily the rain stopped by the time we got to the first monument and we happily hopped off and snapped these photos.

If you've been following along you know I recently took a flying leap into the 21st century and traded in my pre-paid Metro PCS phone for the iPhone5. Thanks to my new phone I'm also able to use new apps like Instagram, a free photo sharing program and social network that allows users to find beautiful photos using keywords marked by a hashtag (example #whatiwore = photos of users' daily outfits). Effective Instagram users upload a photo they've taken with their iPhone, choose a filter that adds an artsy touch to their photo, then categorize the photo using popular hashtags. Check out the photos I've been "instagramming" lately and follow me on Instagram (username: breaellis); Don't own an iPhone? View my Instagram photos here.

Oh What A Night

WHAT I WORE: tip to toe!

{sweater- Lord & Taylor// dress- Goodwill// booties- Marshalls// bag- Miss Ivy}

On Elle Varner: (cape) Betsey Johnson, (collar) Patricia Field, (shoes) Topshop

VENUE: Shadow Room, 2131 K St, NW (Washington, DC)
HOST: Elle Varner, signer/songwriter
SPONSOR: Clear Hair Care

Oh What A Night~ Thanks to a tip from the BLM Girls I had an amazing night out celebrating the natural, healthy hair and positive, impactful lyrics of singer/songwriter Elle Varner. "ROOTED IN STRENGTH: A toast to your inner beauty!" was held at Shadow Room a Vegas inspired nightclub located in the "lobbyist district" of the city on K Street; the venue and event organizers chose a select group of fashion and beauty bloggers to cover the event instead of traditional press.

We were ushered through an underground tunnel to a super secret location within the club (there was even a special elevator involved) and then in we walked to Elle Varner's dressing room. I've never seen a celebrity's tour rider (the food and drinks they request in their dressing rooms) up close, but it was super interesting...seems Varner is a natural girl on the inside and out; she had tons of Fiji water, organic juice, honey and mixed nuts!

Varner chatted with us about her beauty routine (before Clear she only used Shea butter on her hair), what inspires her music and what she splurges on...SHOES! She was thoughtful, sweet and so down to earth. And then she went on stage and blew us ALL AWAY! She performed with an amazing human beat box accompanying her and she KILLED IT!

Thank you so much to Clear Hair Care, Shadow Room, BLM Girls and especially Elle Varner for asking me to cover this event...OH WHAT A NIGHT it was!

Congressional Black Caucus (CBC)

WHAT I WORE: tip to toe!

{All dresses from Goodwill}

I had the pleasure of being invited to a few parties during CBC week in DC.

CBC stands for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, which is based in Washington DC and is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy, research and educational institute that each year puts together a week of conferences, galas and parties that promote African American Congress people such as Eleanor Holmes Norton, our rep here in DC.

While I had an amazing time here is my wish list for next year's CBC week:

1. Out of town visitors here for CBC should treat the city and the conference with the reverence it deserves. You are in the nation's capitol to celebrate the political achievements of your fellow African American professionals...YOU ARE NOT ON SPRING BREAK!

No barking, getting wasted, or inappropriate tweets/Instagram photos using the CBC hashtag please.

2. CBC organizers EDUCATE and INFORM at every opportunity. It should be clear which congress person we are supporting at each party and there should be opportunities to sign up to get involved with  issues important to that congress person. PARTY WITH A PURPOSE!

3. There should be a wide range of times you can attend CBC conference sessions; some during the happy hour time slot (6-8pm) would be great. Unfortunately I cannot take off work to attend a CBC session, but i would love to be able to attend one that is held in the early evening. Even combining one of the sessions with a happy hour and holding it at a bar instead of in the Convention Center would appeal to me.

All in all CBC week is an exciting time of year to be young, gifted and black in Washington DC and I look forward to it each year. Did you attend any CBC events? Let me know in the comments!

Wedding Belles

Long before there was Pinterest I kept an obscurely titled folder on my desktop where I stored images of how I imagine my wedding...the table settings, the favors...and yes THE DRESS! And that dress is pictured below...backless, lacey and fabulous by Monique Lhuillier.

Trunk Show {September 27-29}

Remember back when I played dress up in the beautiful gowns at Carine's Bridal Atelier? Well I'm happy to report that the boutique has been named "The Best Bridal Retailer in DC" and the bridal experts at CBA, located in Georgetown, are hosting a Bliss by Monique Lhuillier trunk show this Thursday through Saturday, September 27th - 29th.

Monique specifically created the Bliss line to make her same aesthetic more accessible to brides by her choices in textiles and embroideries and this event provides a special incentive for  attending brides (10% off when you mention this blog WHAT I WORE: tip to toe!).

The newest Spring 2013 collection will be featured at the trunk show as well as a selection of her best sellers from previous collections, like my dream dress pictured above! Appointments are necessary.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact the store at 202-965-4696. Regular store hours are Monday 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. All viewings are by appointment only.

Miss Sixty

Washington, DC (1960's)
Earlier this year my aunt, pictured right, celebrated her 60th birthday with a very swanky soiree; above is a photo of her with her baby brother, my uncle (and Godfather) with whom I share a birthday month, and usually a family birthday party. Hope you're enjoying my Throwback Thursday family portraits. {LINK}

{blouse- Ann Taylor// pants- LOFT// shoes-  Ann Taylor// bag- Miss Ivy}

My favorite DC Party PR Girl, Whitney Stringer, invited me to a hair affair honoring Miss Lynne Wooden a top stylist with close to two decades of experience styling hair in Washington, DC. Lynne celebrated the1 year anniversary of her salon, located in Logan Circle. Celebrity talking head (with an equally famous head of hair) Paul Wharton hosted the soiree and really made the party memorable by having us all "shake our hair back and forth" and wiggle to the Wobble. It's official, if you are invited to a Whitney Stringer PR event you must 1) RSVP Immediately! 2) Book an appointment at Salon Lynne 3) Come dressed to impress...and to party!

Celebrating Women Runway Event

I recently had the opportunity to attend a blogger preview at Last Call by Neiman Marcus for the Potomac Mills "Celebrating Women Runway Event" which will take place on Saturday, September 22 at 2PM. {RSVP to rware@simon.com and tell them @breaellis of WHAT I WORE: tip to toe! invited you}

Stylist Lani Inlander, of the blog Real Life Style was on hand to show us some of the trends for Fall (jewel tones, animal prints/textures/images and the color oxblood) and LCNM store manager Tom Boiles gave us a guided tour of the Neiman Marcus outlet. PS Bergdorfs literally pulls a truck up behind the outlet and unloads wares directly from the luxury department store.

There are alot of changes happening at Potomac Mills...new restaurants like Cheesecake Factory, Bobby's Burger Place and Bahama Breeze are coming this fall...and a luxury-for-less one stop shop area called The Fashion District has been created, where you'll find outlets for Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Juicy Couture, J.Crew, Neiman Marcus and more!

Today is the last day of New York Fashion Week and I'm so sad I wasn't able to cover it as promised... believe me no one was more disappointed than me, but I am glad I had the opportunity to cover Fashion's Night Out DC right here in my hometown. I'm also glad that I got the opportunity to wear all of the outfits I'd set aside for NYFW. To find out why I didn't attend NYFW read my post {NYFW or Bust}and to see my coverage of the street style in Adams Morgan for  FNO DC go to their website (http://www.fashionsnightout-dc.com/) and read my recap. Better luck next year huh?
