NYFW or Bust

So it doesn't look like my plan to attend NYFW is going to work out.

I can't justify the $800-1,100 cost of attending (press registration $80+lodging $250+roundtrip train to NYC $100+car service to Brooklyn after FNO $65+Meals for 3 days $200+Cabs for 3 days $125) and I'm facilitating a huge company wide event at work the day before so I'd be a zombie once I arrived for the shows. Better luck next year, I'm hoping to be sponsored next time around.

Anywhoo, if you've been following along I've spent the last two weeks putting together my daily outfits using just 20 items from my closet. I consider this intense training for the styling marathon that is Fashion Week. It has been a great strengthening exercise (shopping is my cardio) for my styling muscles and I can't wait to put them to good use for Fashions Night Out here in DC.

I'll be covering Fashions Night Out Adams Morgan, the neighborhood is participating in FNO for the first time this year and I can't wait to share what they've got planned. Check out the schedule of the FNO Adams Morgan events and if you're in DC on Thursday September 6 please stop by Adams Morgan and say hello!

Dress Like Yourself

WHAT I WORE: tip to toe!

{top- Ann Taylor// skirt- LOFT// sandals- Franco Sarto}

It's Day Three of my modified 30 for Thirty wardrobe challenge. I'm counting down the days (14 days left) until New York Fashion Week by putting together twenty outfits using only 20 items from my closet. Mixing and matching the clothes I already own gets me in the mood to play stylist for myself during NYFW. It's easy to go out and purchase new items, but the best outfits are the ones that really represent your personal style and the best advice I've gotten about what to wear for Fashion Week is this: DRESS LIKE YOURSELF!

Fashion in the Nation's Capital

So the count down to New York Fashion week continues. There are just 15 more days until the event and I'm still styling these 20 pieces from my closet. Before I can think about fashion's most important time of the year I have to learn more about the history of fashion in my own back yard.

I traveled to ward 8 to attend the Fashion, Law and Policy Center's series on The Rise of Fashion in the Nation's Capital. The lecture was held at the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, did you know there's a free roundtrip shuttle from the National Mall to this museum?

The space was lovely and the lecture included inspiring words by Holeeta Cain, Founder of Cain & Carlyle; D. Carlyle Briggs, Photographer and Business Manager for (Cain & Carlyle); Claudia Diamante, Founder of handmade leather bag line Diamantina; Jarmal Harris, Founder of The Jarmal Harris Project, which will launch a 12 piece collection of women's clothing in September; and my own nail stylist Indigo Makong of Indigo Nails in Capitol Hill.

Tax-Free Weekend (VA)

Every summer since I moved back to DC I've taken on the biggest shopping challenge of the year...no not bathing suit shopping...BACK TO SCHOOL shopping! I take my tween cousin back to school shopping and let me tell you there is nothing more challenging than letting a pre-teen loose in the mall then trying to edit her choices.

For all I think I know about shopping, fashion and person style it only takes one
"Bre-Bre nobody wears that anymore..." to put me in my place!

I usually try to stick to an age-related budget...this year she turned 15 so I'm giving her $150 to spend on back to school gear. Lucky for both of us that money will go farther this year as areas around Washington, DC celebrate sales tax holidays

First up is Virginia; from Friday, August 3 through Sunday, August 5 shoppers will enjoy a sale-tax exemption* and deeper discounts on select essentials including apparel, footwear, electronics, backpacks and more for the upcoming school year.

To get the most bang for your back to school buck check out your local outlet malls. My favorite? An oldie but goodie, Potomac Mills, which was a required stop on I-95 on the way back from the water park growing up!

Potomac Mills is the largets outlet mall in Virginia and is not only participating in Virginia tax-free weekend, but is also offering even deeper discounts at select retailers, including Bloomingdale's -The Outlet Store, DKNY Company Store, J.Crew | Crewcuts, and more.

And like any good celebration Virginia tax-free weekend at Potomac Mills comes with gifts...Virginia residents will receive a free gift, while supplies last. Beginning Friday August 3, the first 250 shoppers to stop by Guest Services in Neighborhood 4 and show a valid Virginia ID will receive a complimentary Potomac Mills reusable shopping tote.**

Not to be outdone, Last Call by Neiman Marcus is offering and additional 50-65% off
of select clearance merchandise from Wednesday, August 1 through Monday, August 6
