Over the summer I went to a screening of "The Tents" a documentary film about the history of New York Fashion Week (NYFW). Basically New York's fashion week started in the 90's when American designers (think Donna Karen, Ralph Lauren, Betsey Johnson, Tommy Hilfiger, etc.) were feeling that their collections were not being held in the same regard as foreign designers.

The term "The Tents" comes from the days when the shows were held in Bryant Park; essentially a public park adjacent to the New York Public Library. Because this was an open air green space it needed to be covered for the fashion shows, so huge white tents were erected each season and elaborate stages were built inside. New York Fashion Week created a spectacle that in turn created interest in American designers... or at least excitement about what was happening inside of the tents.

If you've been reading WHAT I WORE: tip to toe! for awhile then you know a few things... I'm a fourth generation native Washingtonian, which means I grew up in the Nation's Capital and so did both my parents... as well as my maternal grandparents and great-grandparents. There is a family joke that a slave ship docked in Georgetown and our ancestors ran into Rock Creek Park and didn't come out for decades! Either way I'm DC through and through and even a 6 year stint in California (San Francisco and then Los Angeles couldn't change my love of this city.
The only thing I love more than Washington DC is DC at night. This city is so romantic when its all lit up. If you come to visit you simply must take a bus tour of the monuments at night. My favorite is the FDR memorial with all of its waterfalls and f…

New Year's Style Resolution

Image
WHAT I WORE: tip to toe!dress- Goodwill | booties- Sam Edelman | bag- Loft

For the past few years, instead of making a New Year's resolution, I've made a Style Resolution. Last year it was to create a signature look; I decided the blazer is my spirit animal. Check out my blazer + sheath dress look for work or blazer + jeans look for the weekend, here's another casual blazer outfit.
This year I've resolved to focus on quality over quantity. This means I'll purchase only exceptional pieces that can't be replaced season after season. And speaking of seasons, I'll attempt to shop seasonally; shopping just 4 times a year in anticipation of the next season's fashions. Wish me luck!
