The Hamilton

Restaurant Week just ended here in DC and I was able to hit up one of my favorite spots with a few blogger friends...The Hamilton. Located at the corner of 14th in F Streets, The Hamilton is in a prime location. Right around the corner from the White House and on the direct route from National Airport. The restaurant was open 24 hours originally, which was great for Hill staffers coming out of late night legislative sessions or Washingtonians up at odd hours on their way home from business trips.

What makes the restaurant so special to me is that the building used to house Garfinckel's "a prominent department store chain based in Washington, DC that catered to a clientele of wealthy consumers." One of my mom's first jobs was as a sales clerk in Garfinckel's Sportswear department, which was ironic because Garfinckel's was one of the last department stores in the area to allow people of color to try on items. Literally black people could purchase items from the store, but were NOT allowed to try them on. Do you know the history behind your favorite DC hot spot?
